A seminar series on

Interannual to Decadal Variations and Prediction of Monsoons

Preamble
Monsoon rainfall is considered to be the lifeline of India. Indian Summer Monsoon Rainfall (ISMR) exhibits prominent variations from the inter-annual to decadal timescales. Prior knowledge on such variabilities would have a large bearing on agricultural and economical growth of the country.

In recent time, decadal climate variability and prediction is gaining importance. Our ability to reasonably understand and predict monsoon characterstics a decade from now would help taking long-term decisions on water resources, irrigation, and food security.

During the next few weeks, we will listen to a host of eminent scientists on the feasibilty, usefulness and challenges of interannual to decadal prediction. We hope that these seminars and subsequent interactions will spawn new research and help improve real-time prediction systems.
