In the last few decades, important knowledge has emerged about the present climate of the earth and its dramatic changes in the past. Indeed, new observations from field experiments, satellites and ocean buoys, together with theoretical calculations and powerful computer models, have helped in understanding complexities of the atmosphere-ocean-climate system. In light of this complexity, there are several fundamental open questions, and quite surely, new discoveries on the horizon. With increasing demand for more accurate weather and climate forecasts, the prospects for young researchers are bright. The challenges of understanding and prediction of climate are multidisciplinary, we welcome science and engineering graduates to join us in this exciting endeavour.
Several univerisities and government organizations such as the Ministry of Earth Science, the Indian Space Research Organization, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and the Armed Forces require scientists trained in atmospheric and oceanic sciences. Further, as the economy has grown, there has been an increase in industrial applications of weather and climate information. Prominent sectors among these are : the agriculture industry, aviation, energy resources, insurance & financial services, oil & gas exploration and risk management. We expect this demand from the private sector to grow in the coming years.
